Gambling at Muay Thai Fights in Thailand Posted on October 14, 2026October 7, 2026 By Angela Chang Muay Thai isn’t just a sport in Thailand; it’s deeply intertwined with the country’s culture and economy. Gambling is a significant part of this, influencing everything from match-making to fighter behavior. Betting on fights is a popular pastime, and for some, it’s a full-time job. While gambling adds excitement and financial stakes to the sport, it also raises ethical concerns and can put undue pressure on fighters. This article explores the pros and cons of gambling in Muay Thai, its impact on the sport, and the psychological toll it can take on fighters.Western audiences, accustomed to point-based systems, often struggle to understand how gambling shapes the scoring and outcomes in traditional Muay Thai fights. By understanding the complex relationship between Muay Thai and gambling, we can gain a deeper appreciation for the sport and the challenges faced by its athletes, as well as current arguments for and against entertainment Muay Thai.Gamblers at Omnoi Stadium. Photo by Angela ChangMuay Thai as an Economical Means of LivelihoodThe conversation around gamblers cannot be fully understood without first talking about poverty. In Thailand, Muay Thai is not just a sport; it serves as an economical means of livelihood for many. The financial ecosystem surrounding the sport, particularly through gambling, makes it evident how integral this practice is to the economy. Gamblers bring their cash to the stadiums, and their presence is front and center, making it clear that monetary incentives play a significant role in the sport’s viability.Muay Thai has long provided a potential for financial stability, especially for fighters from rural backgrounds and lower socioeconomic classes. Through fight earnings, tips, and side bets from gamblers, fighters gain a critical financial lifeline that supports them and their families. However, this reliance on gamblers also highlights the delicate balance between maintaining the sport’s integrity and catering to the economic realities that many participants face. The involvement of gamblers can create a cycle where the pursuit of financial gain overshadows the sport’s traditional values, leading to potential ethical dilemmas and pressures that can compromise the authenticity of Muay Thai. The Prevalence of GamblingGambling is deeply embedded in Muay Thai culture, even though most gambling is illegal in Thailand. The Gambling Act of 1935 splits gambling into two lists. List A covers casino-style games, which are banned outright unless a royal decree allows them, and that has only happened once, when the government briefly ran casinos in the 1940s. This is why Thailand has no legal casinos (a bill to allow casino resorts has stalled). List B covers lotteries, horse racing and traditional contests, which can be permitted with a licence. The best-known legal forms are the government lottery and licensed horse racing. Muay Thai stadiums and outdoor fight events fall into the licensed category: permits are obtained beforehand, which is what makes betting in the stands legal. Betting anywhere else, including online, is not.In the early 20th century, organized fights became popular in stadiums. Betting draws significant revenue for stadiums, which rely on crowds not only for ticket sales but also for the betting culture that sustains the sport. From friendly wagers among fans to significant bets placed by organized crime, gambling has become part of the sport’s fabric.Gamblers are passionately engaged in matches, their cheers and jeers creating an electric atmosphere that affects fighters and judges alike. This dynamic of having a gambling-centric audience forced stadiums to prioritize the needs and preferences of gamblers to ensure profitability. For a long time, the design of events, the pacing of fights, and even the matchmaking were heavily influenced by the interests of those wagering large sums of money. These experienced individuals offer betting advice, set odds, and can even influence fighter strategies. Their deep knowledge of fighters and fight history allows them to create odds that sway betting decisions. As respected authorities, Sian Muay wield considerable influence over the betting landscape, advising gamblers on strategic bets.Gamblers drive revenue, making them essential to Muay Thai’s economy. The presence of gamblers ensured that stadiums, fighters, and gyms remained financially viable. Or at least, this was the case up until fairly recently. The rise of modern Muay Thai has challenged the traditional role of Sian Muay and the presence of gamblers at fight events. With the increasing popularity of international promotions and the globalization of the sport, things are changing. While betting remains a significant part of the Muay Thai landscape, the focus has shifted towards entertainment and fan engagement, rather than solely relying on gambling revenue. The presence of gamblers today still dominates Rajadamnern on certain days, as well as stadiums like Channel 7, Omnoi, and Rangsit, highlighting a unique spectator demographic. (Lumpinee has not had any type of “gambling style” fights since its post-COVID reopening.) View this post on InstagramA post shared by Lord K2 (@lordk2_muaythai) Gamblers thrive in Muay Thai for several reasons:High Stakes: Large sums of money can be wagered on fights, making the financial incentives substantial.Fighters often depend on side bets and tips from gamblers (which include “injections”) as a supplementary income, making gambling essential to the fighters’ financial viability.Unpredictable Outcomes: Gamblers prefer evenly matched fights, which keep things exciting and uncertain.Cultural Significance: For many in Thailand, betting on fights is a social activity, bringing people together and creating community ties.Gamblers bring high levels of engagement to matches, but they also bring potential complications. With organized gambling often being tied to mafia-like groups and gangs, the stakes can be extremely high, and the risk of corruption follows.Despite the drawbacks, gambling incentivizes matchups between fighters who are evenly matched. This drives a balance in the competition, as gamblers want fair matchups with even, but unpredictable, outcomes. Without an even playing field, gambling would lose its appeal, making fairness crucial. That fighters’ weights during official weigh-in are marked down to the decimals, because any type of advantage, no matter how slight it may seem to outsiders, can influence who the gamblers decide to hedge their bets on.Please support the continuation of content on Muay Ying via PatreonThe Impacts of GamblingPressure on Judges and Biased JudgingJudges in Thailand can find themselves under intense pressure due to gambling interests, particularly when a large amount of money is at stake. Certain judges have reported facing intimidation and threats from powerful gamblers who demand a specific outcome, compromising the impartiality of decisions. Some judges are successfully bribed. In March 2017, the danger became all too real. Outside Lumpinee Stadium, a gambler attacked official Udom Deekrachang with a wooden baton in broad daylight, blaming him for a 20,000 baht gambling loss and convinced he had been paid to rig the fight. When the stadium’s security guard stepped in, the attacker’s accomplice shot the guard dead. This incident highlighted the risks that some officials face when they don’t make decisions that align with the gamblers’ preferences. When judges yield to this pressure, the risk of biased decisions rises, leading to unfair outcomes that damage the credibility of Muay Thai and disappoint fans who value the sport’s integrity.Match-Fixing and PoisoningMatch-fixing is rarely unearthed to the public but still very much a real issue in Muay Thai, largely driven by gambling interests. In some instances, fighters are covertly approached by gamblers, who offer them money to throw a fight. These interactions are usually hidden from coaches and trainers, adding a layer of secrecy and making it difficult to regulate. If a fighter agrees to throw the match, the sport’s authenticity is undermined, and the loss of trust from fans can be severe. In one case that did come to light, Rajadamnern fighter Roycherng Singmawin admitted to taking 150,000 baht from a gambler he had met on Facebook to lose a fight he was expected to win comfortably. Why would fighter risk getting banned for life from the sport? Gamblers offer substantial bribes, often significantly higher than the official purse, which can be a powerful incentive for fighters to compromise their integrity. View this post on InstagramA post shared by Lord K2 (@lordk2_muaythai) Beyond just approach attempts, there are an alarming amount of cases of fighters being poisoned to prevent them from winning, ensuring a fixed outcome in a more sinister way. In 2014, Sangmanee Sor Tienpo was rushed to hospital after a fight at Rajadamnern, and doctors confirmed he had been poisoned. More recently, after a fight at Omnoi Stadium in March 2026, Pharuehatnoi S. Sommai was hospitalised at risk of kidney failure. His gym suspects he was drugged, and police later found CCTV of a member of his own team handing him an energy drink before the bout (Thaiger). Police are still investigating, and no one has been charged. Such extreme cases serve as a reminder of the lengths some individuals may go to in order to secure a specific betting result. The poison is typically laced in a drink, presented to the fighter as a gesture of goodwill before a fight. The main reason why some stadiums, such as Rajadamnern and Lumpinee, have a designated water official in each corner is so this does not happen during a fight. Unfortunately, not all people who are complicit are strangers or “just another gambler” – it can be a trusted gym member or even trainer who does this to get some fast money. Fighters interviewed by VICE described exactly this, including one who was handed water in his corner by a relative of his gym owner just before his fight. The Effect on Fighter Performance and StyleGamblers play a direct role in influencing the dynamics of Muay Thai fights. Their vocal support and jeers can significantly impact the energy and momentum of a match. Corners often look to the crowd for guidance and advice, and fighters may adjust their strategies based on the reactions of gamblers. This pressure to perform for the crowd and satisfy the demands of bettors can sometimes lead to a more cautious approach. In traditional Muay Thai, fighters often adopt a more conservative style, throwing fewer but more powerful strikes. This strategy can be attributed to the influence of gambling, as fighters who are ahead are happy to stay ahead by doing less to yield a more predictable outcome. By limiting their output and avoiding unnecessary exchanges, fighters can reduce the chances of getting knocked out or suffering significant injuries. View this post on InstagramA post shared by Lord K2 (@lordk2_muaythai) “Ooweee”!The influence of gamblers extends beyond just the fighters themselves. The people cornering the fighter (plus the supporters who are literally in the corner) play a crucial role, often shouting support and instructions during rounds. When the corners AND gamblers get loud, it has a twofold effect: it boosts the morale of the fighter and subtly influences the judges, as the judges are not immune to the psychological impact of enthusiastic support (after all, they are human). Being loud and supportive can help sway the judges’ perceptions, creating a more favorable outcome for the fighter who seems to have more backing.Due to this, sometimes fighters can “win” according to Muay Thai rules, but “lose” to the gamblers. The Mechanics of GamblingMuay Thai’s betting system is distinct, with live betting and fluctuating odds based on real-time fight performance. Betting odds are not static; they evolve with every action or inaction, shifting according to each fighter’s in-ring conduct and perceived chance of winning. Bookies and Sian Muay may set these odds after assessing fighters’ physical conditions and strategies post-weigh-in, providing gamblers with up-to-date advice. The Role of “Injections”In the world of Muay Thai, “injections” refer to substantial financial incentives offered by gamblers to fighters during a match. These injections are essentially incentives that provide immediate motivation for fighters to secure a win. They can occur at any point during a fight, intensifying the pressure on fighters to perform to their highest potential. The amounts involved in these injections can be lucrative (up to millions of baht), significantly impacting a fighter’s earnings. Gamblers often use this tactic to sway fighters’ performances, knowing that the allure of quick cash can be a powerful motivator. Fighters who are struggling may find themselves more willing to take risks or push their limits when faced with the prospect of an injection.Side BetsSide bets, particularly common in rural areas, serve as an informal support system, generating income for fighters and local communities alike. Each fighter and their gym comes up with the agreed amount. The money is accumulated from the fighter’s supporters, which can include the gym owner, family, friends, trainers. Side bets on each side must be equal, with the winner taking all. Because the pot is often pooled from family, neighbours and gymmates, a fighter can end up fighting for a whole small community. Some famous side bets include: Kulabdam vs Tawanchai for 6 million baht and Allycia vs Dangkongfah for 1 million baht.Summary of Pros and Cons of GamblingPositive AspectsDespite the numerous challenges, there are some positive aspects of gambling in Muay Thai:Fair and Competitive Matches: Gamblers help ensure that fights are balanced, which is essential for an exciting viewing experience. Without gambling, there might be less incentive to create evenly matched fights, potentially leading to predictable and dull outcomes.Increased Financial Opportunities: Gambling can provide financial support for fighters through injections and sidebets, and promote the sport, bringing attention and funds to Muay Thai events.Negative AspectsHowever, the negative consequences of gambling are profound. The involvement of organized crime in gambling raises serious ethical concerns. With money flowing into the sport from illegal activities, the integrity of Muay Thai is jeopardized.:Pressure on Judges: The influence of gambling can lead to biased decisions, undermining the fairness of the sport.Match-Fixing: Corruption from gamblers can undermine the integrity of Muay Thai, making it difficult for fans to trust the outcomes of fights.Fighter Exploitation: The pressure to perform for gamblers can compromise a fighter’s well-being, as they may feel forced to prioritize winning over their safety or long-term health. The Entertainment Muay Thai model attempts to move away from gambling-centric events. A goal of entertainment Muay Thai is to attract fans who appreciate the sport itself or convert potential fans with its action. It is characterized by faster pace and aggression, creating an experience that prioritizes entertainment over traditional gambling aspects (hence the term). Sometimes the priority in action comes at the expense of technique and aesthetic muay Thai. The Rajadamnern World Series, for example, announces, scores and shows every round to the audience, a format IFMA describes as a way to prevent gambling. Not everyone believes gambling can be pushed out that easily: when Lumpinee announced its ban, a World Muay Thai Organization representative warned that gamblers would simply keep betting online.“Hurts Like Hell”For those looking for a deeper look into the dark side of gambling in Muay Thai, the 2022 Netflix docu-drama Hurts Like Hell provides an eye-opening perspective. It explores the challenges and dangers faced by fighters, emphasizing the consequences of gambling and its impact on the sport. This documentary highlights the complexities of the Muay Thai industry in Thailand.Gambling in Muay Thai is a paradox: it sustains the sport financially but also introduces ethical and cultural complexities. Whether Muay Thai can adapt to modern expectations while preserving its cultural heritage remains an open question.
