It is often marketed as a martial art that can also teach self-defense skills. However, as someone who has trained and competed in Muay Thai, I can say with certainty that Muay Thai alone does not teach self-defense. And places that teach Muay Thai without incorporating aspects of self-defense should be frowned upon.
